Cairo’s famed Egyptian Museum is getting a multi-million dollar facelift. The renovation is part of an initiative to draw tourists back to Cairo following two years of unrest.
“From Tahrir … we are sending a positive message to the entire world: Egypt is doing well,” said Mohammed Ibrahim, minister of antiquities, during a press conference in the museum courtyard.
Organizers said they want to return the dusty 111-year-old museum to its former glory by painting the walls and restoring the floors in their original colors and patterns. Plans also call for the demolition of a scorched building that stands between the museum and the Nile River.
One of the museum’s most famous exhibits, King Tutankhamen’s treasures, will be moved to a new Grand Egyptian Museum being built near the Giza pyramids. It is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
