Through Oct. 12, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Jasper Johns: Night Driver, a comprehensive retrospective of works by seminal American artist Jasper Johns. Sponsored by BBVA Foundation, a Strategic Trustee of Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, this exhibition features around 140 works including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, an artist’s book and a stage design.
Among the paintings are works dating to the 1950s, presented along with recent pieces created during the 2000s. A native of Augusta, Georgia, Johns was raised in South Carolina, where his education began. His training continued in New York following his move there in 1953. Johns soon became a fixture within New York’s vibrant arts community, forming relationships with prominent figures including artist Robert Rauschenberg, composer John Cage and renowned choreographer Merce Cunningham.
Recurring images and motifs in Johns’ work included the American flag, targets, maps and numbers. Following an exhibit at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1958 when he was 28 years old, Johns was catapulted onto the main New York art stage, with Museum of Modern Art purchasing three of the pieces included in the Castelli exhibit.
Fascinated with the process of creating art, Johns turned his attention to print making — leading him along a path that included screen printing, lithography and etching. He experimented in sculpture, often concentrating on common, everyday objects that could be grouped together.
Collaborations with other artists included Andy Warhol, Robert Morris and Bruce Naumann.
Jasper Johns: Night Driver is organized chronologically, with paintings and sculptures displayed separately from works on paper. The Guggenheim Bilbao is open Tuesday–Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For ticket information, visit the museum’s website. All tickets include an audio guide.

Sep 17, 2026High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture
It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
