Several months ago I interviewed magician Kayla Drescher for Talking Travel. Last week I attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Cosmic Underground Theater, a new magic and comedy theater founded by Drescher and Harrison Lampert.

Located on the near northwest side of Chicago, the venue holds 40 seats, making it an intimate experience. There is a mix of education and entertainment. On weekdays there is The Magic Institute, a multilevel workshop program for adults. Weekends feature three unique shows. Monthly open mics give students and magicians opportunities to hone their skills in front of live audiences while also raising money for workshop scholarships.

Originally from Connecticut, Drescher has performed all over the world. She also is a magic consultant for movies, television and theater productions.
Lampert is a magician, actor and comedian from Philadelphia. He studied improv and sketch comedy and performed weekly at The Groundlings. In addition to his own comedy and magic show, Lampert has performed on television and in movies.
Also on hand was Chicago’s 35th Ward Alderman Anthony Quezada. Before the actual ribbon was cut, Quezada spoke of the significance of such a positive business opening in his neighborhood. The crowd showed their approval with thunderous applause that made passing drivers honk their horns.
The night started with a fun ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a lively open house. A special performance of Magicians on Mars was a spectacular end to the night.

In talking to both Drescher and Lampert, I could feel their excitement in seeing a dream come to fruition. A simple 20 minute drive from my place, I am sure I will return, as Cosmic Underground Theater is destined to be an entertainment destination.
As I drove home, I felt such positive energy. Recalling my earlier interview with Drescher and how it lead to this night, I was so grateful for the experience. Dare I say it was magical?
