Sunday Brunch at Rex at the Royal

by Hannah Gruen

Feb 26, 2025

This past weekend, my mom came into Philadelphia from the suburbs to get a post-Valentine’s brunch with my girlfriend, Brena, and me. We elected to go to Rex at the Royal, as Brena and I had been there for brunch once before — probably over a year ago — and had been meaning to return. I remember loving the pancakes and the atmosphere.

It was a Sunday, and we had not had the foresight to make a reservation far enough in advance, but we showed up with optimism, and that got us far. We weren’t able to get a table, but we sat right at the spacious, blue marble-topped bar without having to wait. The interior of the restaurant is inviting and elegant, with deep forest-green walls, modern chandeliers, and a collection of U-shaped booths upholstered in royal blue velvet clustered around marble-topped tables.Hannah

I ordered a mocha to start, and it was delicious. I’ve found that espresso drinks at brunch locations can be hit or miss for me, but Rex at the Royal was definitely a hit!Hannah

For my meal, I opted for the chocolate chip pancakes since they were so delicious last time, while Brena got the country omelet and my mom went for blueberry pancakes. We all enjoyed our meals, though I will say the pancakes didn’t quite stack up to my memory. I don’t know if I’m looking back with the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia or if they weren’t quite the same as they used to be … .

Despite that, I enjoyed my meal and the overall vibe of Rex at the Royal. It was not too crowded, service was quick, and we had some fun banter with our waitress. Plus, I got to spend some time giggling with my mom and girlfriend. What more could I ask for?
