In Germany, stoneware and porcelain beer steins, tin figures, Schwibbögen (decorative candle holders), and cuckoo clocks represent the long tradition of craftsmanship, brewing and sociability in Germany, especially around the Christmas holidays.
Take crafts originating in the Erzgebirge region, where nutcrackers, Christmas pyramids, wooden toys and incense smokers all speak to a long history of skill and heritage.

Saxon Schwibbogen, also known as Erzgebirge Schwibbogen, also has its roots in the Erzgebirge and dates back to the 18th century. The first Schwibbogen was made in 1740 in Johanngeorgenstadt, at a time when Erzgebirge was an important mining center. Originally made of metal, the Schwibbogen symbolized the sky watching over the miners. Today, Schwibbögen is a staple of Christmas decorations, not only in the Erzgebirge but also worldwide. Modern Schwibbögen are available in numerous designs and sizes, often with electric lighting and musical accompaniment.
The Black Forest cuckoo clock is a world-renowned German invention, originating in the 17th century. The production of these clocks, often richly decorated with carved motifs, represents the region’s history and craftsmanship, and can be mechanical or battery-operated. They are popular souvenirs, attracting tourists who visit workshops and museums to learn more about its history and production.

German beer steins have a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. From simple wooden mugs, beer steins evolved into artistically designed stoneware and porcelain steins, especially in the 15th century in the Westerwald region. In the 16th century, pewter lids became popular, keeping beer fresh and protecting it from contamination. Today, beer steins are not only practical drinking vessels but also symbols of tradition, sociability and cultural heritage. They are often decorated with reliefs and engravings depicting scenes from daily life, hunts and historical events.
Meissen porcelain, crafted since 1710 in the town of Meissen, close to Dresden and Leipzig, was the first European porcelain and set the standards for quality and artistic design. The Meissen porcelain factory developed numerous innovative techniques and designs still highly valued today. The famous blue-crossed swords mark guarantees authenticity and quality. Meissen porcelain can be found in royal palaces, museums and upscale households worldwide, representing elegance, precision and artistic expression.
Nuremberg tin figures, produced since the 13th century, are renowned for its detailed artistry and variety. These figures were originally made as toys and later as collectible items. Nuremberg tin figures depict historical, military and everyday scenes, and are often intricately painted. The tradition of tin casting is still maintained in Nuremberg today, with modern techniques complementing traditional manufacturing methods. Nuremberg Toy Museum introduces visitors to all different types of toys and tin figures that have been made in this region of Germany.
