This weekend has a different meaning for me this year, as it is the first holiday since I lost my grandmother. On February 16, my Mom-Mom passed away after a seven-month struggle with cancer. She had babysat me since I was three months old and had moved in with me, my mom and my dad when I was six years old. Needless to say, I was incredibly close to Mom-Mom, and it was an extremely difficult loss for me. On Sunday, I am going to visit Mom-Mom’s grave for the first time and take her some flowers for Easter. I grew up attending Catholic school, so the significance of Easter — Jesus dying and rising again to new life — is not lost on me this year. It is comforting for me to believe that Mom-Mom has a new life now. She was always so proud of me, but she was always weary of my travels around the world alone! I remember packing for my trip to India. She just kept reminding me I didn’t have to go, but I know, deep down, she wanted me to get out and see as much of the world as I could. She would often ask where I was headed next and moan and groan about it — Do you really need to go to Korea, Chile, Italy, etc. — with a smile and encouragement. Fittingly, one of the last things she said to me was, “Where are you going now?” It made us both smile and laugh.
