LATAM Airlines’ Extensive Sustainability Strategy Sets New Standard

LATAM Airlines Group first launched its sustainability strategy in May 2021 with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and zero waste to landfills by 2027. Wanting to protect iconic South American ecosystems and provide a future for generations to come, the airline’s extensive strategy for the next 30 years includes three pillars of work: Climate Change, Circular Economy and Shared Value.

Designed collaboratively with experts, employees, community and environmental organizations, each pillar reflects a carefully thought-out notion of how to protect the planet. The pillar of Climate Chance sees the airline work to reduce its emissions through the incorporation of sustainable fuels and new aviation technologies expected to become available as early as 2035.

The airline’s Let’s Fly Neutral program provides corporate and cargo clients the chance to select from a portfolio of projects with high environmental value to offset emissions generated during their air travel. LATAM Airlines Group also matches the number of tons offset by its corporate clients.

As of July 2021, LATAM Airlines became the first airline group in South America to sign a letter of intent to explore options to reduce carbon emissions through the Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage System with Airbus. This system involves filtering and removing up to 90 percent of carbon emissions from the air.

The second pillar of the airline’s sustainability strategy, circular economy, means LATAM commits to contributing to a culture of elimination, reduction, reusing and recycling throughout its operation to become a group generating zero waste to landfills by 2027. To accomplish this, LATAM Airlines plans to eliminate all single-use plastics by 2023. Two programs working to achieve its goal of a circular economy include Recycle Your Trip and Second Flight. Recycle Your Trip prioritizes recycling while Second Flight combines recycling with local communities and job creations.

The third pillar of shared value sees LATAM Airlines expand its capacity to transport cargo and people for health problems, environmental care and natural disasters. As part of this pillar, the Solidarity Plane Program offers free aid in the event of health, environmental and natural catastrophes, as well as infrastructure, expertise, and transportation and cargo deliveries for those in need. During the pandemic, LATAM Airlines transported more than 295 million COVID-19 vaccines for free within Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru.

The Solidarity Plane Program partners with organizations like Peru’s Food Bank, Operation Smile and Red Cross, and recently announced a strategic alliance with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to support worldwide humanitarian crises.

As of October 2021, LATAM Airlines announced its first alliance with CO2BIO, a project committed to the conservation and restoration of the Colombia Orinoquía region. Spanning more than 200,00 hectares of flooded savanna and home to more than 2,000 species, this project allows LATAM to advance in protecting the natural heritage of the region for future generations, combat climate change through greater CO2 capture and contribute to improving the quality of life in local communities.

Hotel Nice Beau Rivage Review

In the city Henri Matisse once called home — and where Musée Matisse holds his largest collection — Hotel Beau Rivage has a special connection with the artist, who first visited the hotel in 1916 and painted famous sea views from his room 89 in 1917. Today, framed Matisse prints — many brightly colored cut-out collages from the artist’s JAZZ collection — decorate its walls. Hotel guests also benefit from a partnership with the museum.
