Venues and Green Spaces
Mayfield Park opens this September, marking Manchester’s first new city center public park in more than 100 years. The 6.5-acre park lies adjacent to Piccadilly Station and features open greens, an urban square, floodable meadows and biodiverse ecological areas by the river. Mayfield Park also includes sheltered areas and more rugged greenery to provide visitors with a wide variety of environments.
This recently opened, former train line now serves as an urban park. Similar to New York’s High Line, the Grade II-listed Castlefield Viaduct underwent a great transformation thanks to the National Trust. This July, the National Trust opened half of the 330-meter viaduct to the public as part of a phase-one trial. Further plans to open the rest of the viaduct are in process.

Manchester’s oldest music venue, dating back to the 19th century, expanded, inviting guests to explore its new interior. After reopening its door in March, the 500-capacity venue now features a new bar and a smaller, 80-capacity stage for more intimate performances. Band on the Wall also recently partnered with This Charming Naan to serve guests 100-percent, plant-based naans, calzones and small plates.

Slated to reopen this September, New Century Hall underwent extensive restorations to accommodate its 800-capacity space. New Century Hall boasts a sprung dance floor and 1960s-style disco ceiling. Having hosted great artists like Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones, New Century Hall continues to wow guests with its restored accompanying food and drinks space. Two-time Great British Menu winner Adam Reid joins the venue through a new concept called The Butty Shop, serving delicious food and drinks to guests.
Restaurants
Maray comes to Manchester, bringing its famous Middle-Eastern flavors and recipes to Albert Square. Originally based in Liverpool, Maray’s newest restaurant in Manchester marks its largest restaurant to date and its fourth restaurant overall. Guests can now enjoy Maray’s acclaimed disco cauliflower and innovative cocktails in Manchester.

Located within Edwardian Manchester, this award-winning Japanese and Mexican restaurant unveils a new and enhanced dining menu, along with the latest cocktails and an upgraded wine list, all developed by the restaurant’s London-based culinary team. Peter Street Kitchen also boasts its new and exclusive residency with Whispering Angel, the renowned Provençal rosé from Château d’Esclans.
Kampus, Manchester’s newest neighborhood, takes the title as Manchester’s foodie hot spot, featuring a wide variety of eateries and breweries. Recent openings in Kampus include Nell’s New York Pizza and the renowned bakery, Pollen. Local brewery Cloudwater also opens their new Beer House, while The Beeswing invites guests to enjoy its all-day eatery and wine bar. Don’t forget to try some of Northern Pie and Co.’s award-winning pies, marking another exciting addition to the area.
Hotels
This luxury, 5-star boutique hotel will soon grace Peter Street in the heart of the city by the end of 2022. Forty Seven features 32 bedrooms, as well as luxury one- and two-bedroom suites. Guests will enjoy a fine-dining experience at the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Asha’s, and craft cocktails at The Peterman. Forty Seven takes up a Grade-II listed property and incorporates elements of the former shipping warehouse throughout the hotel.

Slated to open in early 2023, Mollie’s Manchester, from the team behind Soho House, will soon come to St. John’s neighborhood. Set to take over the historic former Granada Studios, the building once home to TV soap Coronation Street, will include 140 rooms, a 164-cover diner restaurant, lounge bar with live music and an outdoor heated terrace.
Starwood Capital and Property Alliance Group’s Treehouse Hotel comes to Manchester in mid-2023, marking the brand’s second location in the United Kingdom. The 206-bedroom hotel forms just part of a wider multimillion-dollar redevelopment of the former Renaissance Hotel on Deansgate. The redevelopment includes new retail space, as well as pop-up food and drink vendors led by renowned chefs. Treehouse Hotel will boast colorful rooms and suites, two restaurants and a panoramic rooftop bar.

May 27, 2025Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu
Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
