Boba is all the rage right now. The delicious tapioca balls/drink originates from Taiwan from back in the ’80s. This is something you’ve always been able to get in Korea Town and Little Osaka (now better known as Sawtelle Japantown) in Los Angeles. For the thoroughly authentic experience, you really have to be out in San Gabriel Valley, though.
Some of the San Gabriel favorites include Half & Half Express, a very authentic experience; Factory Tea Bar – find lots of board games while you enjoy a refreshing drink; and Chicha San Chen. Some of the things you want to look for when in search of good boba is freshly made tapioca balls soaked in honey. For those who’ve never experienced this delicious drink/snack, you want to make sure the boba is fully tender, from the inside out. If it’s anything but tender and not overly chewy, you want to go looking for a new place.
We recently discovered another San Gabriel gem closer to our neighborhood in Cerritos, Bopomofo Café. I found my way to legit boba through my husband, and I cannot go back to the mediocre spots I was going to before.
