Etihad Airways, partnering with Abu Dhabi Airports Corporation and WHILL, completed trials of autonomous wheelchairs at Abu Dhabi International Airport recently. The autonomous wheelchairs are designed to assist passengers with limited mobility, making the flight experience more convenient for both passengers and airlines. The trial included more than 60 guests who self-drove the wheelchairs through crowded airport areas and lounges before arriving at their gates. Once guests arrived at their gates, the autonomous wheelchairs returned to their docking station.
The WHILL autonomous wheelchairs detect obstructions and automatically stop when needed.
“The feedback received from guests who participated in these trials was overwhelmingly positive, and the airline looks forward to the possibility of offering its guests the choice of autonomous wheelchairs in the future.
