Last week, United Airlines applied with the U.S. Department of Transportation for a new service between Newark (EWR) and Cape Town International Airport. The route is slated to operate non-stop, three times per week, starting in December.

The non-stop service decreases current travel time by more than four hours. A Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft is slated for the route, with 48 United Polaris business-class seats and 88 economy-plus seats, along with 116 economy seats.

The flight is scheduled to depart Newark at 8:30 p.m. and arrive in Cape Town at 6 p.m. the next day. Return flights depart Cape Town at 8:50 p.m., arriving in Newark at 5:45 a.m. the next day.

“We are always looking at ways to expand our industry-leading international route network to offer our customers more convenient options. We’re thrilled to announce the addition of Africa to our global route offering,” said Patrick Quayle, vice president of international network, United. “This new flight will provide customers with the only nonstop service between the United States and Cape Town.”
