A Taste of Walla Walla in Portland

On a recent weekend trip to Portland, Oregon, my husband and I attended an annual event that brings more than 50 Walla Walla wineries to the city for a great winetasting party. Walla Walla Wine on Tour has been making the rounds of Pacific Northwest cities for at least 15 years, giving the producers of Walla Walla Valley Wine a chance to bring their wines directly to their admirers at events in Portland, Boise, Spokane and Seattle. It provides the wineries a great opportunity to broaden exposure to their fabulous wines, and it gives consumers the chance to try a plethora of offerings from that great American viticultural area without having to make the trek to the far southeastern corner of Washington state.

Apples and Wine

Welcome, November! My October was very busy, so I'm looking forward to some time at home before the pace picks up as the holidays approach. Three out of the four weekends in October were spent in the Portland area, so I spent a lot of time (four hours-plus in each direction) in the car, but it was worth it for the opportunity to spend time with friends and family up north.

A Warm Summer Evening

Last Saturday evening my husband and I welcomed several friends and neighbors to our home to celebrate the beginning of summer with good food, wine and conversation. The temperatures that day stretched into the mid-90s, so we started out indoors, with everyone (as happens so often) clustered in the kitchen and dining area. We toasted the start to summer with Champagne (Piper Heidsieck NV Brut) and a table full of cold appetizers: cheeses, crackers and bread, crudite and a lemon-garlic dip, some home-made spring rolls and fruit. As the sun lowered in the sky and a light breeze sprung up, though, we all adjourned to the back patio to relax around the table in comfortable chairs.  Our lazy Susan, crafted from the top of a wine barrel, made it easy to share the open bottles around the table without anyone having to get up.

Fall in Wine Country

After a very busy and stressful early fall, my husband and I had even more reason to look forward to our annual trek to Walla Walla, Washington, for its Fall Release weekend the first weekend of November. We left a very soggy Portland behind on a Thursday morning to drive up the Columbia Gorge, the skies brightening and the clouds dissipating the further east we went. Some four hours later as we neared our final destination, the temperature hovered around 60 and the lowering sun and few remaining clouds made for a beautiful afternoon.
