According to a recent report from Hashtag the World, London is the world’s most hashtagged city on Instagram for 2017.

Last year, all major cities across the world experienced significant growth in terms of the number of Instagram posts in which they are featured. London was featured in approximately 60,000 posts each day, stealing the spotlight from New York City for the first time since the Amsterdam-based organization began monitoring and tracking the world’s most popular hashtags in 2015.

New York didn’t fall too far behind, taking second place. Third, fourth and fifth places were claimed by Paris, Dubai and İstanbul, respectively. Los Angeles and Tokyo experienced the highest growth rate last year at 50 percent.

Part of the increase is attributed to Instagram’s continuously growing popularity, with 700 million active users, making it the most popular social media network in the world behind Facebook.

“For the third edition of this exclusive report, we can clearly see that Instagram continues to be a powerhouse when it comes to sharing travel experiences or enjoying one’s own city and using hashtags. For the first time in three years, we were surprised to see London taking the first position in the ranking, pushing New York City to the second spot,” said Lucas Ribeiro, founder, Hashtag the World.
