Luxembourg’s fascinating history and fairytale landscape are ample reason to visit in any season — but once the landscape is dusted with snow, the charm factor is off the charts. In the capital of Luxembourg City, the annual Winterlights festival adds to the fun, with Christmas markets, street entertainment, concerts, exhibitions, parades and shows in the historic center and surrounding areas.
Visitors can even taste Luxembourg, thanks to street vendors offering local favorites including potato fritters, gingerbread and other traditional sweets, handmade chocolates, savory winter soups, and warm red and white regional wines. Not far away in Echternach, the country’s oldest city, a series of open-air concerts culminate in the Christmas concert on Dec. 15. The city also plays host to a significant Christmas market held on the beautifully landscaped grounds by the Gothic town hall and St. Willibrord Basilica.
