The Faroe Islands’ popular Auto Odyssey: Self-Navigating Car experience just expanded, meaning travelers can now choose from 45 locally curated itineraries guiding them to residents’ favorite, lesser-known corners of the islands.

Auto Odyssey uses a blind GPS system in partnership with 62N car rental company to disperse travelers more thoughtfully across the archipelago, ensuring no two travelers will arrive at the same place at the same time. Each itinerary features four–six landmarks lasting between three and six hours, with the navigation showing one section of the trip at a time to maintain the ethos of surrender seeking.

The newly added itineraries introduce year-round experiences and explore new regions, including the Northern Isles. Stops in the Northern Isles include the fishing village of Leirvík; the hidden valley of Árnafjørður (home to the region’s only beach); and Kuroy, where houses rest at the foot of dramatic slopes.

The system also now includes excursions like trekking up the Eiðiskollur cliffs looming above the village of Eiði, where a summit hike promises views of the legendary Giant and the Witch sea stacks.

For the first time, every itinerary now also includes a culinary stop, highlighting the islands’ burgeoning food scene. Drivers could find themselves in Skopun, where they’ll step inside Búrhandilin, celebrating its 150^th anniversary as the oldest continuously operating grocery store in the Faroe Islands; or in Brehðvirkið, the islands’ sole artisanal sourdough bakery also renowned for its exceptional coffee and bolle med ost breakfast; and various other gems.
