You don’t have to jet off to California or even Europe to enjoy great wineries. In Norfolk, Virginia, visitors can venture to many wineries to taste some of the state’s finest wines. The region’s newest, Waters Edge Winery, came to fruition thanks to Jason and Dyan Witt.

The Witts moved to Norfolk while Jason was on active duty in the Navy and soon the family-owned winery emerged. Visitors to Waters Edge Winery find many popular varietals like Merlot, Cabernet and Chardonnay. But they’ll also discover harder-to-find wines like Petit Verdot, Port, Barolos, Pilotage and Gewürztraminer.

Waters Edge Winery sources grapes globally, allowing the winery to create more than 50 kinds of wine from grapes hailing from California, Italy, Chile, Germany, and as far as New Zealand.

If you find yourself wanting to try even more wines after a trip to Waters Edge Winery, add Mermaid Winery to your list. This charming winery reopens at the end of the month in a brand-new downtown location within a historic building. Mermaid Winery focuses on sustainably produced wines from Virginia grapes, allowing visitors to enjoy a truly local experience.

The winery’s knowledgeable and friendly staff guide guests through the tasting experience and the winery regularly hosts wine tastings and live music events.

Other popular wineries in and around Norfolk include Grandiflora Wine Garden, Crystal Palate Wine & Gourmet and Tinto Wine & Cheese Etc.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
