Claridge’s recently opened its first-ever spa, located in the basement of the iconic London hotel. Created and designed by Hong Kong-based designer Andre Fu, the new spa serves as a haven of wellness and tranquility. Fu’s work marks just the latest project he has worked on with The Maybourne Group. The 7,000-square-foot spa features a swimming pool, steam rooms, sauna and seven treatment rooms. The seven treatment rooms boast full-height oak paneling to conceal all equipment.
The spa draws influence from the spirituality of the East. Fu’s own experiences visiting traditional Japanese Zen gardens and Japanese temples. Instead of imitating specific aesthetic traditions, however, Fu incorporates contemporary design drawing heavily on Asian design influences to convey strong feelings of warmth and intimacy.
“’Wellness’ is the focus of the design of Claridge’s Spa. This demonstrates a more general societal trend towards looking after the wellbeing of ourselves and the environment,” said Andre Fu. “The notion of ‘luxury’ is also evolving to become more holistic, incorporating concepts of wellness. For me, this is all about creating an escape that celebrates mindfulness, and is pure and balanced.”
Entering the foyer of the spa, guests meet a full-height cast glass screen crafted by Irish artisan Eoin Turner. The screen guides guests into the rotunda, a meditative, dimly lit space featuring a suspended Japanese art installation with falling water trickling down it. Walking through a 12-meter tunnel with a slanted wall opens onto the indoor pool, complete with personal cabanas and a mini waterfall projecting out from one side of the pool. The corridor also leads to a series of private changing pods, each with private showers and amenities.
Treatments offered at the new spa include a 90-minute bamboo and silk ritual and 75-minute body detox and sculpt treatment.
