Germany’s Christmas markets are always a draw for holiday season shoppers, and the region of Stuttgart pulls out all the stops to make it a delightful experience. This year from Nov. 27–Dec. 23, Stuttgart’s medieval center is all a-sparkle with lights, music, food and more than 200 decorated wood-roofed stalls, following the city’s 300-year old tradition of holiday market hosting. Located at Markplatz 1, visitors can peruse thousands of gift and decorating options while drinking in the Baroque atmosphere and the occasional glass of mulled wine, offered alongside freshly grilled bratwurst and other local treats.
Also considered one of Germany’s premiere markets, the Baroque Christmas Market in Ludwigsburg just north of Stuttgart offers more than 175 charmingly decked-out stalls in the market square, and an adjacent pedestrian area with permanent shops. The market is open daily 11 a.m.–9 p.m. from Nov. 26–Dec. 22. A daily Christmas program for kids commences at 3 p.m. each afternoon. Later, tour the residential palace, fitted with an ornate private theater — one of Europe’s oldest.
