Enjoy sun, sand and culture this summer in the Caribbean at the British Virgin Islands’ biggest bash, the Emancipation Festival.
Taking place July 24–Aug. 9, the 61st annual festival celebrates island ancestors’ freedom from colonialism in 1834, as well as local history. A special occasion, the festival draws BVI natives from around the world to honor the island’s emancipation from slavery in 1834.
Locals and tourists are invited to gather in Road Town Village, East End and Carrot Bay on the main island of Tortola to commemorate BVI’s rich history with a variety of spectacles, including pageants, parades, boat races and street performances.
The celebration this year kicks off with The Rise and Shine Tramp, musical performances from local bands, and continues with parties, events and parades featuring native dances, colorful costumes and traditional music.
