As Women’s History Month comes to a close and musician Suzi Quatro releases an epic album, it was the perfect time to get an update from this rock pioneer. Quatro gave me an update and a lot of food for thought.
Quatro’s 13-track album, Freedom, was released March 27. A fan of Quatro since her first solo album in 1973, I anxiously await any new release. As I listened to Freedom multiple times, I kept getting the feeling of a song progression telling a story. In our interview, Quatro confirmed my thoughts. It is a story. It is her story.
With more than 60 years in the music industry and 55 million record sold, Quatro stated Freedom is a return to her, with nothing left to prove.
Freedom starts with the song “Freedom,” a high-energy rock-blues tune. A couple songs later, “Choose Yourself” delivers a powerful message and beat and might be the heart of this album. “Woman’s Song” seems to end the story arc but not the album. The next song, “Kick Out the Jams,” featuring fellow Detroiter Alice Cooper, is simply pure rock and roll from two greats. The last song is funky and a nice end to the album. As I wrote this, looking back at the song titles, they pretty much tell a story in themselves.

In our Talking Travel interview, Quatro gave insight into the songs and the process, including working again with her son. She told funny stories involving Alice Cooper, her husband and others along the way.
When it was time to talk travel, I asked about her travel routines as Quatro sets to embark on a 13-day, 10-show tour. As a veteran of countless hours and miles of travel, Quatro discussed her advance preparation, trip meals, travel management and general thoughts on travel. Of course, I had to ask about a homecoming concert in Detroit. Her answer gave me hope.

As I listened to our interview and the album again, I realized this is not just fitting for Women’s History Month. Freedom is perfect for Mental Health Awareness Month in May.
