Usually when I think of river cruises, what first comes to mind is an expedition in Europe or Asia through exotic, less-touristy destinations. This may be the case for you, too, but I am here to say if the idea of a river cruise sounds intriguing, you do not always have to look at taking one on another continent — or in another country, for that matter.
In Benjamin Kerns’ recent article on trazeetravel.com, he provides some insightful details on some of the best river cruises in Europe, but there are options here in America, too!
For example, you may want to channel your inner Huckleberry Finn and consider taking a trip with American Queen Steamboat Company. AQSC includes a fleet of four different vessels, including the famous American Queen, the largest riverboat ever built, and the brand-new American Countess. Your options through American Queen Steamboat Company include tours on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland rivers, just to name a few.
Another possibility for an American river cruise includes booking a trip through aptly named American Cruise Lines or USA River Cruises. Both lines will take you through awesome domestic destinations; the great thing is that they are suitable for all ages and families.
I would strongly encourage doing some research on taking a cruise through the United States, as it is an often-overlooked idea to get away and learn more about the country we live in. For more information, keep your eyes peeled for Global Traveler’s annual Cruising Issue set to release in November.

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.

May 6, 2024Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History
All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
