Earlier this month my husband and I enjoyed a quick getaway to New York City to see Cabaret on Broadway. I saw the musical during a previous Broadway revival years ago. It is one of my favorites, and I was excited to see this production. We stayed at Conrad New York Downtown for our visit — look out for a full review of my stay in an upcoming issue of Global Traveler.

We arrived at the hotel shortly before check-in time and, thankfully, our room was ready. Our friends joined us for the getaway, and they arrived a few minutes ahead of us. We all grabbed a drink and some light bites at the lobby-level ATRIO wine bar and restaurant, then made our way to our respective rooms to get ready for the evening. We had a reservation at Leonessa, the property’s rooftop bar, for a pre-show drink. The space offers stunning views of downtown Manhattan and the Hudson River.

After Leonessa, we took the subway uptown to the August Wilson Theatre for the show. Upon entering, we were transported to 1920s Berlin and the setting of the musical, The Kit Kat Club. Ushers gave us Cabaret-branded stickers to place over our phone cameras, to further encourage the immersive experience. The lobby area was decked out to resemble The Kit Kat Club, with live music and dancers moving through the space. As show time approached, we made our way to our seats in the front row of the mezzanine section.

This production of Cabaret features in-the-round staging, with the performance taking place in the center of the theater, surrounded by the audience. We saw Tony-nominee Eva Noblezada as Sally Bowles and actor-musician Orville Peck as The Emcee. My husband and I saw Orville Peck perform at a musical festival several years ago, and his turn as The Emcee was mesmerizing. The show reminded me how special of an experience it is to see live theater and how lucky I am to live close to New York City.

Cabaret runs through October. I highly recommend checking it out for an immersive, live theater experience.
