On Tuesday evening I had the pleasure of attending opening night of Fiddler on the Roof’s limited engagement in Philadelphia. On stage only through Sunday, Oct. 28, the Tony Award-nominated revival is worth making time for or seeing when it comes to a city near you.

It had been a while since I last acquainted myself with Tevye, Golde and their five daughters, and I forgot how many songs I knew from the musical. I found myself silently singing along to “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” and, of course, “Tradition.” In fact, it’s three days later and I’m still humming the tunes.

The Broadway-caliber performance was executed with near-perfection. And it’s no wonder, considering it is directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher and choreographed by Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The original Broadway production of the show was the first ever to surpass 3,000 performances, and this revival is sure to bring the celebrated classic to the next generation.

I’m a big fan of musicals; I’ve seen many in New York City and my hometown of Philadelphia. Of those I’ve seen in Philadelphia, I think this was the best one yet.
