I started last weekend watching the Chicago Union host the Minnesota Wind Chill in an Ultimate Frisbee Association battle. The Union stayed undefeated to end a perfect night along the lakefront.
Founded in 2012 as American Ultimate Disc League, it rebranded as UFA last year. Composed of 24 teams, UFA is divided into four geographical divisions. The 12-game season runs April through July, culminating in UFA Championship Weekend, Aug. 23–24, at Breese Stevens Field in Madison, Wisconsin. Union fans are hoping to see Chicago’s first UFA title.
Games consist of four 12-minute quarters played on an 80-yard field. The seven-on-seven game starts with an opening throw. The receiving team attempts to advance the frisbee to the opposing end zone through passing. No running with the frisbee is allowed. Play stops with a score, a dropped pass or an interception.
The Union were founded as Windy City Wildfire during the league’s first expansion in 2013 but renamed in 2020. Union games are played at Martin Stadium on Northwestern University’s lakefront athletic complex. The venue boasts an incredibly scenic backdrop of Lake Michigan and the skyline.

The Union beat the Wind Chill 25–15 in a dominating effort. A 10-point victory margin is pretty big in UFA action, but this game seemed even more lopsided. The Union were in control all game.

Since this game, the Union added one more win and now stand at 10-0. The Union are the only undefeated team in the UFA. With two games left in the regular season, the Union have a three-game lead on Minnesota for first place in the Central Division. The Union also have outscored opponents by 95 points, by far the biggest spread in the UFA.
Along with the game, there are plenty of other fun things on site. Kids love the fun zone. Mascot Perry, a bluebird of sorts; game host Tim; and live music entertain fans.

To celebrate the win, we joined fans and the team at nearby Double Clutch Brewery. The Clutch curds and Camaro Calamari were the stars of a solid menu.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
