A Taste of France in Philly

My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary with dinner at Bibou in Philadelphia. A perennial favorite on the city’s best restaurants list, the charming restaurant serves inventive French fare from a menu that changes weekly.

Bibou is a BYOB, so we brought wine and a bottle of Dom Pérignon, given to us last year as a wedding gift. We arrived early for our reservation and were seated immediately. After opening our Champagne with a quick “cheers,” we dove right into our amuse bouche of small canapés. The first course on the menu turned out to be my favorite — beet and watermelon soup. The refreshing soup was topped with a light cheese and shaved cured egg yolk.

Bibou

Next up was scallop cannelloni followed by a pike dish accompanied by mushrooms and carrots. The fourth dish was the restaurant’s signature foie gras. This dish is the only exception to the menu rotation. In between courses we enjoyed bread with rich, French butter. The main course was a flavorful guinea fowl with potatoes and spring onions. Ahead of dessert, we enjoyed a light cheese plate of a Swiss-style cheese, tomato jam and bread. Dessert was a blueberry soufflé, finished with goat milk crème anglaise. As a final bite, we also enjoyed a small plate of coconut macaroons and madeleines. The service was impeccable, as were the variety and flavors of the meal.

Bibou serves great food while still maintaining its neighborhood spot vibe. It’s perfect to celebrate an occasion or just have a really tasty meal in Philadelphia.
