My first trip to Nashville was a delightful surprise. Originally, I flew in from Philadelphia for business, but I couldn’t resist turning it into a mini getaway with my soon-to-be sister-in-law, Laura. We arrived a few days early to soak in as much of Music City as we could and, boy, did we make the most of it!
We had a smooth ride from the airport to the hotel, hitting no traffic whatsoever. The airport itself was a breeze to navigate — clean and efficient, always a good start.
We arrived at JW Marriott Nashville in the early afternoon, so our room wasn’t ready just yet. We decided to grab a bite and drink at Cabana Club while we waited. The shrimp ceviche was tasty and refreshing, just the right amount. From the moment we walked into the hotel, we were impressed. The lobby exuded elegance with its signature scent, and the modern décor set the tone for a stylish stay. The service was impeccable; Zach and John made sure we knew everything about the amenities and recommended a few nearby places to enhance our experience. A fun tidbit: The hotel boasts its own herb garden on the third floor, and we spotted fresh basil and lavender while sipping our drinks at Cabana Club. The lavender syrup adds a unique touch to one of the cocktails, and it was as delightful as it sounds.
After a refreshing spritz and a bit of relaxation, we received the notification our room was ready. We headed up to the 27th floor. I’ll share the full review of the guest quarters in an upcoming issue of Global Traveler magazine, but for now, let’s just say it was a luxurious retreat with plush comfort, sleek décor and stunning views.
Once we settled in and refreshed, we headed to Broadway to experience Nashville’s vibrant nightlife. JW Marriott Nashville’s prime location made it easy for us to explore the city’s bustling areas, including the stadiums and famous honky-tonk bars. Our first stop was Twelve Thirty Club for some espresso martinis — creamy and strong, everything I love about a good martini. The rooftop views allowed us to scope out the scene and decide where to head next. Laura, who had been there before, was familiar with the vibe and helped guide our evening plans.
We strolled along Broadway, taking in the lively atmosphere and live music. We made a quick pit stop back at the hotel to recharge before venturing out again. It wasn’t a late night, but it was the perfect start to our Nashville adventure. Lucky Bastard Saloon, memorable for its enormous nachos, offered great service; ample space; and, of course, fantastic music. Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row also stood out as a lively spot with something for everyone. The punchy drinks and great tunes kept us coming back.
The next day involves The Gulch, some shopping and a delectable experience at Bourbon Steak. Come back for more updates on our Nashville escapades.

Head south to Texas for Halloween fun and enjoy a warm-weather extension this fall. In Austin, elegance, history and spooky tales are the themes at The Driskill. The hotel is said to be frequented by the spirit of Jesse Driskill, who constructed the property in 1886. The scent of cigar smoke in public spaces allegedly announces his presence. A life-sized painting of Jesse is displayed in the hotel lobby, and guests can stay on the lookout for him during the daily 4 p.m. history tour.
