A Busy and Chilly Weekend

by John Wroblewski

Apr 5, 2022

Despite the frigid temperatures, I spent a lot of the last few days outdoors enjoying collegiate softball. I saw six games among a softball trifecta of DePaul, Loyola and Northwestern.

Although I saw five wins, yesterday’s was the most thrilling. The Loyola Ramblers won on a two-out, two-strike, walk-off home run by Madison Ebeling. After the game, I talked to Loyola coach Alicia Abbott and hitting hero Ebeling. Obviously excited with the win, neither seemed to mind the cold as much.softball softball

In addition to the games, I stopped at Aw Yeah Comics, a fun store blocks from my home. Co-owner artist Art Baltazar and Chris Smits were there for the release of The Legend of Abraham Linkage, their newest comic book. Aw Yeah Comics is a throwback to comics stores of yesteryear with a funky, fun modernization.

My weekend food highlight came from George’s Deep Dish. The menu features fun names for the food. I chose McFly’s Sci-Fi, with baby spinach, grape tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, roasted garlic and goat cheese.pizza

George’s has a unique take on traditional deep-dish pizza. It has a sourdough focaccia-style crust, caramelized cheese edge and a cornmeal base. The dough cold ferments in its own container for several days to give it an interesting texture and flavor. My first time here will not be my last. I already planned a few more Loyola softball games to be followed by George’s pizza.

All three teams play away games next weekend, but the University of Illinois-Chicago softball team is in town. They play near Chicago’s Little Italy. I’m planning more post-game pizza.

Hôtel de Sers Reopens in Paris

One of Paris’ most elegant addresses has reopened following a full renovation. Hôtel de Sers, part of the B Signature Hotels & Resorts portfolio, was once the private mansion of Henri-Léopold Charles, Marquis de Sers. Located within the illustrious Triangle d’Or, close to the Champs-Élysées and Avenue Montaigne, the property’s refined décor and original Haussmannian architectural elements have been carefully preserved. These include a spectacular marble staircase and the structure’s original carriage entrance, along with period features such as wrought-iron details and magnificent moldings and ceilings of the original salon de réception.

Global City Guidebook: Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is not only one of the capitals of South Africa but also the oldest city in the country. Cape Town hugs the Port of Cape Town in Table Bay, extending to the Hottentots Holland Mountains. The city endured years of segregation during apartheid, including uprisings. Today the city continues to rebound in a post-apartheid era, with many major companies headquartered in the city center, popular beaches teeming with visitors in warmer months, engaging museums and aquariums, and a thriving tourist industry promoting the city’s culture and natural beauty.

Hotel Saint Augustine Review

Blending with its Montrose neighborhood like the indigenous and cultivated plants hugging the property’s walkways, the newly built Hotel Saint Augustine opened mid-January 2025. The first Bunkhouse hotel in Houston, Texas, is easily mistaken for garden apartments. Seventy-one guest rooms and suites encompass a tree-lined block. The hotel’s buildings are only two stories tall and also house a lobby, lounge, restaurant and event space. Tucked into a corner of the grounds sits a circular outdoor pool.
