All Nippon Airways plans to add the Airbus A380 to its fleet, according to the Nikkei Asian Review and Japanese media.

Reports detail Airbus won an agreement from Japan’s largest airline to sell three Airbus A380 aircraft in a deal valued at about 150 billion yen.

The Nikkei reported the carrier plans to introduce the planes in 2018 on routes from Tokyo (NRT) to Hawai’i and other popular destinations.

The order forms part of a strategic plan calling for a fleet renewal and expansion.

Boeing has heavily dominated the aviation industry in Japan for decades, according to Bloomberg. The new aircraft would become ANA’s first Airbus-made long-haul jet to join its existing fleet of Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

In 2011, Japanese carrier Skymark Airlines signed a deal with Airbus for six A380 aircraft but later had to cancel due to bankruptcy. ANA Holdings owns 16.5 per cent of Skymark and is sponsoring a rehabilitation plan and restructuring efforts for the airline.
