The Centers for Disease Control is telling travelers to Hawai’i not to cancel their trip because of the Big Island’s outbreak of dengue fever.
The disease has affected 88 people since Sept. 11, and only 13 of those have been tourists, the Hawai’i Department of Health reported to the Associated Press. About 400 people worldwide are infected annually by mosquito-borne virus.
“This isn’t a huge outbreak compared to elsewhere,” Dr. Lyle Petersen, director, CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases, told the AP.
Dengue fever does not naturally occur on Hawai’i’s islands, and can only be brought by people traveling from places where it is endemic. It spreads only by mosquitoes and not by person-to-person contact.
“Many, many more people are traveling internationally, thus the possibility of importing a disease like dengue to a place like Hawai’i … is obviously going up,” Petersen told the AP. “If you consider how many tens of thousands of people come to the islands every day the risk is extremely small. Simple measures like mosquito repellent … can greatly reduce your risk.”
Travelers should take precautions against mosquitoes, but otherwise the outbreak is not a cause for concern.

The current concept of branded residences can be traced to Boston, where Four Seasons debuted its first modern branded residences in 1985.
