Following an impressive $90 million restoration and nearly a decade of careful planning, Marriott’s Hotel Cleveland, Autograph Collection, located at 24 Public Square in downtown Cleveland, completed its extensive renovation project.
Shaped like an “E” opening onto Superior Avenue, Hotel Cleveland was built in 1918 by the Van Sweringen brothers on the corner of Superior and Public Square. The hotel was built before the construction of the adjacent Cleveland Union Terminal, dedicated in 1929 as the city’s major rail station and also beautifully restored as a mixed-used building. The site where the 1918 Hotel Cleveland was constructed already had a long history of lodging and hospitality as a popular tavern and hotel that had existed on the site since 1812. The original Hotel Cleveland was eventually destroyed by a fire in 1840 but was rebuilt that same year.

Today, the hotel offers a stunning new interior design and features 451 guestrooms, including 50 suites and a new lobby that displays carefully restored historic features. Its 59,000 square feet of meeting space includes 30 state-of-the-art work spaces and three ballrooms, one of which is the largest Marriott ballroom in Ohio
Two new restaurants include Maker, s already becoming a city hot spot for lunch, happy hour or dinner. There are views of Public Square from the windows, leather seating and a beautiful backbar. A large, green crystal chandelier gives Maker a dramatic presence. The menu offers small plates, creative entrées and lots of side dishes.

Mowrey’s is modeled after the original hotel’s 1800s tavern (and uses the same name), providing á la carte, American-style breakfast favorites and brunch. The venue is also available for tucked-away private dining experiences.
“Everyone has a story or memory connected to the Hotel Cleveland and the other hospitality pioneers that stood at this address, and we’ve been collecting their stories and memories,” said Frank McGee, general manager, Hotel Cleveland. “One of the many ways we embody the extraordinary city of Cleveland is by sharing those stories with guests as they move through the space, creating truly special moments for them.”

The hotel uses the latest NFC code medallion technology to allow guests to stand before historic imagery and be transported to the city’s most important moments. During The Beatles’ 1964 stay, for example, police were called when mobs of fans surrounded the hotel. This and other stories of the city add to the unique historic richness of the Hotel Cleveland guest experience.
