Blue Man Group made its much-anticipated return to Chicago in a packed Briar Street Theatre on opening night. As it was my first time seeing Blue Man Group, I didn’t know what to expect, but it was more than I imagined.

Blue Man Group started with three friends in Manhattan in 1987. Originally described as “creative disturbances” on the streets, it progressed to small shows and eventually a full performance in 1991. Cirque du Soleil acquired Blue Man Group in 2017.

Originally debuting at Briar Street Theatre in 1997, the show continues to evolve. It is constantly refreshed, adding new music, stories, instruments and technology. “For more than 20 years, Blue Man Group has established itself as one of the top entertainment destinations in Chicago,” said Mary Grisolano, managing director, Blue Man Group. “We are absolutely thrilled to return to the stage and welcome new and returning audiences to the Briar Street Theatre.”

A perfect place for Blue Man Group, Briar Street Theatre is a historic Chicago institution. Built in 1901, the space was originally used as stables for horses owned by Marshall Field’s. It was redesigned into a sound stage in 1970, reopening as a theater in 1985.

Among the unique features is the original second floor, visible as it hangs from the ceiling by turnbuckles. Also, the lobby houses art by Picasso, Van Gogh and others, even the Blue Man Group themselves.

When I asked one of the ushers to describe Blue Man Group, he said it was “art, music, dance, theater, comedy, social commentary, spectacle and more.” I thought that didn’t quite make it clear, but he was exactly right. It’s hard to categorize it. He also assured me I would love it, and he was right again.

The Blue Man Group consists of three blue-painted performers dressed in black. Three is the smallest group possible when attempting to build a community.

They make music and art with unique instruments, including themselves. There’s a bit of paint-splashing, but those close are protected by provided ponchos.

The show can be viewed and enjoyed on two levels. It’s a fun show, filled with music, humor, tricks and more. It’s also a running commentary on interesting human behavior. Either way works, and I found myself alternating throughout the show. Because it was so entertaining, it was easy to simply lose myself on the surface level of pure fun.

As I observed from the 600 audience members, Blue Man Group is suitable for all ages, and all ages were in attendance. Performances are scheduled through Oct. 3, with more to be announced soon.

May 30, 2025By-the-cabin Yachting Redefines the Cruise Experience
I wish this day could last forever!” my windswept 9-year-old exclaimed, his voice soaring over the Mediterranean. He gripped the helm of a Bali 4.6 sailing catamaran off the coast of Marseille, his sun- bleached hair whipping in the salty breeze. The scent of the sea mingled with the aroma of warm baguettes drifting from the Côte d’Azur shoreline. Our captain, a seasoned sailor, subtly adjusted course, letting my son feel the exhilarating pull of the wind against the sails. As the waves lapped against the hull, I realized this was no ordinary vacation — this was freedom, unfiltered.
