Small towns offer a certain charm that makes travelers feel like they are stepping into the pages of a storybook. These quaint towns are often shaped by time and history, and tell a certain story travelers just can’t get enough of. For those looking to visit some of the most charming storybook towns, travel operator Up Norway rounded up five small towns in Norway that promise such charms.
Fjærland
Book lovers and nature enthusiasts alike will love Fjærland, often referred to as “the book town of Norway,” and offering a charming small-town feel thanks to its stunning views and remarkable amount of books. Books are everywhere, from freestanding bookshelves to phonebooks to open-air sheds. Books are more common than people in the small town. Nature lovers, meanwhile, will appreciate the surrounding mountains and calm, still waters of the fjords.
Undredal
This idyllic village is steeped in tradition, known for its goats, locally produced white and brown goat’s cheese, and UNESCO Heritage recognition. Undredal sports colorful buildings on the shores of the fjord, is surrounded by wonderful peaks, and has a charm that has captivated tourists and locals alike for years. This village is so storybook-like, it was the inspiration behind Elsa and Anna’s home in Frozen.
Reine
Reine is a picturesque fishing village in the archipelago of Lofoten, and offers a scenic look into the traditional northern Norwegian culture. The chain of islands is linked by bridges and winding roads, contributing to its beauty.
Røros
Røros is one of the oldest towns of wooden houses in Europe, securing its spot as a UNESCO World Heritage site. These colorful wooden homes are carefully preserved by generations of residents. Røros also has a reputation as the center for handcrafted goods and is known as the “local food capital of Norway.” This little town allows visitors to feel like they are traveling back in time to the 1600s.
Skudeneshaven
Skudeneshaven features a variety of preserved original timber houses and seafront wharves situated on the southern tip of Karmøy. Its narrow streets are lined by white wooden buildings with orange-tiled roofs, creating a bold contrast against the deep blue North Sea.
