Cuba Bracing For Tourism Boom With New Hotel Plans

May 7, 2016
Daily

Cuba is abuzz with the likely pending influx of tourists, and the country is making big plans to accommodate the hordes.

The tourism ministry last month laid out its plan for increasing the country’s hotel room numbers; The National Plan for Economic and Social Development showed the country’s plans for adding 108,000 new hotel rooms in Cuba by 2030.

“We cannot make the mistake other countries have made that, with new development, old hotels are cast aside,” said Manual Marrero, tourism minister,  to the Communist Party daily, Granma. “Tourism has a multiplier effect and the sector has the capacity to promote development of other areas of the economy to create productive linkages.” He also noted tourism will eventually drive the national economy of Cuba.

The National Plan for Economic and Social Development notes the country’s progress on building hotels in the past few years, saying more than 10,900 new hotel rooms were built in Cuba since 2011, and more than 7,000 were renovated, all as Cuba’s tourism increases.

“Each hotel inaugurated is another factory that generates within our borders much needed export income for the country,” the report says.

Cuba has a dearth of hotel rooms, so the report is a concerted effort by the country to rectify the situation. It’s a good move considering the country is on the brink of a huge influx in visitors as the United States begins relaxing restrictions on tourism to the Communist nation.

“Conditions are being shaped to ensure that in the period 2016-2020, we obtain better results and the foundations are created in our economy for sustainable economic-social development,” said the report.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
