Lunar New Year Celebration in Jacksonville, Oregon
Two weeks ago my husband and our daughter and her family attended a Lunar New Year celebration in nearby Jacksonville, a historic gold mining town that was established in the early 1850s upon the discovery of gold in the area. That discovery drew a host of fortune seekers to the region, including those from China. Southern Oregon became home to the earliest Chinese communities in the Pacific Northwest, and by 1864 there were 100 miners in the community, but Chinese immigrants also were merchants, cooks, housekeepers, operated laundries and worked on railroad and other construction and agricultural projects. Newspaper accounts from the era describe Lunar New Year celebrations taking place all during this time, complete with plenty of firecrackers.

A Nice Dinner Out
All of this past fall and the holidays proved a very busy and stressful time for my husband and me, so we were more than happy to spend most of January just hunkered down at home, catching our breath and catching up on shows on streaming services. That does get old after a while, though, so as the days have slowly grown longer and the first signs of spring have appeared, we've started making a few forays out of our burrow and shaking off the winter blahs.
Sharing Favorites with Friends
A few weeks ago, longtime friends Jim and Amber from the Portland area came down to Southern Oregon to stay with friends who had recently moved to our area. On the first evening of their visit, we invited the two couples to our home for dinner and conversation. It gave us the chance to get to know new residents Marianne and Rich, finding we have much in common . . . in addition to our friendship with Jim and Amber, of course. Having relocated a few times since our daughters were grown and out of the house, we know it can sometimes be a slow process to find a new circle of acquaintances in a new place, especially if you're retired. We were delighted to hit it off with them right from the start.

Sweethearts’ Dinner for Two
A few weeks ago my husband and I celebrated Valentine's Day with dinner at one of our favorite local fine-dining establishments, Gogi's Restaurant in the quaintly historic gold mining town of Jacksonville. When the pandemic started and everything shut down, this was one of the places we really feared might close for good, as the dining room is small and the restaurant's fare didn't lend itself well to to-go-style service. But owner-chef Gabriel Murphy took it slowly and patiently. That first summer he offered pick-up service one day a week for one of his excellent soups and the house-made sourdough bread. This allowed him to make use of products he already had on hand, give his wait staff a little income and brighten the days (and palates) of his loyal customers. Many of us opted to purchase gift cards at that time in support of the staff and as a sign that we would return whenever the restaurant did.
