While in Chile, my traveling companions and I spent an afternoon at Viñamar Winery in Chile’s Casablanca Valley, between Valparaíso and Santiago. The location near the Pacific Ocean offers prime grape-growing conditions. Opened in 2001, the winery’s name is an homage to the nearby coastal city, Viña del Mar.
Set on about 680 acres, the winery produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Carménère varieties. We took a tour of the grounds to learn more about the winemaking process before enjoying our own sparkling wine tasting.
After a leisurely tasting on the property’s patio overlooking the vineyards, we enjoyed lunch at the on-site Restaurant Macerado, serving classic Chilean cuisine. We shared a variety of small plates and desserts and each chose our own entrée. The restaurant is located on the second floor overlooking the vineyards and nearby mountains, which made for a spectacularly picturesque dining experience.
