I woke to a crisp Saturday morning and decided to take a long run along Lake Michigan in Evanston. When I finished my run, I got a book from my car and walked back to Shakespeare Garden on the Northwestern University campus.
Northwestern’s Shakespeare Garden was planned in 1915 and completed in 1929. Designed by landscape architect Jens Jensen, it was the first Shakespeare Garden in the United States. The garden was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
In 1920, the Garden Club of Evanston, which maintains the area, began planting the garden with more than 50 plants mentioned in works of William Shakespeare. It also contains a stone memorial with a bronze relief sculpture of Shakespeare designed by Leon Hermant, a sun dial, stone seating areas and wooden benches.

A bit of a hidden gem, it is tucked in between several beautiful buildings. A few of the stone paths in the garden have low clearances due to the natural growth of the foliage. I’ll gladly duck instead of having the plant life trimmed unnaturally.
The Shakespeare Garden is so serene. It felt like I was miles from civilization. I stayed there for a couple hours, enjoying my book and one of the last beautiful fall days.
