My husband and I recently visited some friends in Brooklyn. During our visit, we explored some of the borough’s unique dining offerings.
We arrived at our friends’ apartment to drop off our bags, then made our way to Industry City, a dining and entertainment complex in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood. While there are many dining and drinking options here, we went to Japan Village for lunch. We each ordered a few different dishes from the vendors to sample a variety of the cuisine. Pork katsu, okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancake) and kimchi pickles were standouts. We walked around some more and eventually made our way back to our friends’ neighborhood to stroll through the park near them.
We met more friends for dinner at Werkstatt later that night. The cozy restaurant serves Austrian-inspired dishes. We split some appetizers, including Brussels sprouts and meat and cheese. For my main course, I enjoyed chicken schnitzel. My husband and I split apple strudel for dessert.
The next day, before heading home, we met other friends for brunch in the DUMBO neighborhood. Atrium DUMBO has a French-inspired menu, with plenty of breakfast classics. After splitting biscuits for the table, I enjoyed an omelet with ham, gruyere and mushrooms. Though simple, it was perfectly prepared.
Trying new foods and restaurants is one of my favorite activities with friends, and this visit was no exception.

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
