I am pretty particular about museums. I have my favorites and a few must-visits on my list, a few disappointments and, I have to say, a few pleasant surprises. On my recent trip to Bogotá, Colombia, I nearly opted out of the Museo Botero visit in La Candelaria. Entering the unassuming museum and knowing I am not the biggest fan of Fernando Botero, I was immediately humbled by his impressive collection of works and personal favorites.

Enjoying the expertly informed commentary of our guide, I understood Botero’s style a bit more. His subjects are “big-boned” and a fun representation of humanity, with some sneaky details hidden in each. The Mona Lisa is one of his many controversial pieces receiving a lot of criticism. Personally, I enjoyed the big-boned Mona Lisa and her matching, big-boned frame.

The museum is laid out like a European villa where guests move from room to room enjoying works by Botero and his peers in his personal collection of Dalí, Picasso and more.

Different showrooms display different political themes, time periods and special exhibits — all circling around a beautiful fountain and garden at the center. The open-air courtyard is a naturally beautiful break from the surrounding pieces of art and sculptures, with the vast Colombian mountain range and Monserrate church in the near distance.

Don’t expect any velvet ropes or over-protective barriers. Keep a safe looking distance, avoid flash photography and enjoy Museo Botero’s laid-back, luxury feel.
