When I received an email featuring a sculpture of Chicago Bulls Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen from Dunn Museum, I planned a trip to see Carving Out the Future: The Rotblatt Amrany Studio Story. I went for the sports sculptures, but I got so much more.
Carving Out the Future is the story of the Rotblatt Amrany sculpture studio located in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Founded in 1992 by artists Julie Rotblatt Amrany and Omri Amrany, the studio has placed statues across the globe. One of its most famous is The Spirit, the Michael Jordan statue at United Center. Running through January 2027, Carving Out the Future features dozens of beautiful pieces.
The Pippen sculpture is the focal point at the gallery entrance. Just to the right is a section devoted to Michael Jordan. In addition to the main Jordan sculpture, there is one of his shoe. There are also a few art pieces of him.

Other Chicago sports legends include Ryne Sandberg of the Cubs, Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita of the Blackhawks, and a special piece honoring the 2016 Cubs World Series team.

The exhibition wasn’t limited to Chicago athletes. Other legends sculpted included Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi and Los Angeles Lakers Kobe Bryant. I was pleasantly surprised to see sculptures of WNBA legends Sue Bird and A’ja Wilson. As a longtime fan and supporter of women’s sports, I was happy to see them represented.

It also wasn’t just about sports, either. Two pieces honored late astronaut James Lovell. There was a large bust along with a small depiction of him on one of his moon missions. Lovell was a popular resident of the area for many years prior to his death in 2025. Musician Johnny Cash was another non-sports icon piece. Other pieces did not involve sports or people.

Carving Out the Future is one of several interesting exhibits at Dunn Museum. Located about an hour northwest of Chicago, Dunn Museum features a few permanent exhibits and temporary ones, too. Coming soon is Dancing for Our Tribe: Potawatomi Tradition in the New Millennium, featuring the work of photographer Sharon Hoogstraten.
