Through June, Southwest Germany is pulling out the musical stops in celebration of 150 years of Richard Strauss. One of Germany’s most eminent conductors, Strauss left behind a striking legacy of operas and both solo and chamber works. Remarkably, he wrote his first composition when he was only 6 years old, and went on to create such compelling operas as Salome (based on the play by Oscar Wilde), Elektra and Der Rosenkavalier.
Nine of Strauss’s 15 operas debuted in Southwest Germany in Dresden. Through July, the Leipzig Opera and Leipzig Gewandhaus present the Strauss cycle. On May 24, the Vienna Philharmonic will perform an all-Strauss program with pianist Lang Lang in the Gewandhaus, under the direction of conductor Christoph Eschenbach. On June 14, the Leipzig Opera House presents the premier of Die Frau ohne Schatten, with a world-class cast of performers.

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.

I am looking out at Vietnam’s largest city from the country’s tallest building. Sitting in a comfortable chair facing the floor-to-ceiling window, I have taken in the view in daylight and darkness at dusk and dawn. It’s ever-changing and always hypnotic.
