After failing to secure emergency funding, WOW air ceased operations, canceled all remaining flights and left thousands stranded.

The Icelandic budget airline was founded in 2011 by chief executive officer Skuli Mogensen and began operating in 2012. The airline’s low fares and growing popularity of its route destination, Iceland, helped WOW air grow to employ more than 1,000 people and 11 aircraft. Across its fleet last year, WOW was able to serve 3.5 million passengers after making headlines in 2015 with rates around £99 from Europe to the United States.

According to a statement on the airline’s website, “End of Operation of WOW AIR. WOW AIR has ceased operation. All WOW AIR flights have been cancelled. Passengers are advised to check available flights with other airlines.”

WOW-ticketed passengers who paid by credit card are advised to contact the credit card company for refunds, if even possible.

Any passenger who purchased a WOW ticket from European travel agents, located within the European Economic Area, as a part of a tour package — which includes flights and accommodation or other bundled services — should be protected by the Package Travel Directive. Those passengers are advised to contact their travel agent to arrange an alternative flight.
