Shakespeare’s Globe is a world-renowned theatrical landmark in London. Though the theater burned down in 1613, this is where Shakespeare brought his beloved plays to life. The original, sphere-like structure is still on display, including informational plaques.

Rebuilt in 1996, the current theater can be found about 750 feet from the original site. Visitors can purchase tickets to a live performance (six days a week) or attend a guided tour. Play admission cost as little as a penny during Shakespeare’s day, with averages now between $6 and $14 for standing room, or $33 and $117 for seating in The Galleries.

Unlike other theaters, Shakespeare’s Globe was built with an open roof. This allows natural sunlight to shine through the opening, saving money on expensive lighting equipment needed for performances.

Learning from past mistakes, builders of the new theater kept the same straw-type roof, but this time installed water sprinklers and fire-retardant chemical treatment. It still remains the only building in Central London permitted to have this type of roof.

Tickets for guided tours are available for on-site purchase, averaging $39. The tour is approximately 50 minutes long and runs every half hour.
