Wes Anderson and Pieter Bruegel in Vienna

For decades, I’ve stalked the royal Habsburgs through Europe via their eclectic — and sometimes bizarre — private collections, assembled over a nearly 700-year reign that ended in 1918. Apparently, an interest in their strange tastes is one I share with filmmaker Wes Anderson (and yes, this tickles me immensely).

I can get my fill in Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum during “Spitzmaus Mummy in a Coffin and Other Treasures,” a new exhibition from the museum’s collections and store rooms — many from the Hapsburg’s own private stores — handpicked by Anderson and his partner, costume designer Juman Malouf. On view through April 28, 2019, the special exhibition will be displayed with Anderson’s trademark visual precision and cheeky aplomb — well-known from his films, including The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Isle of Dogs.

After closing in Vienna, the exhibition will be on view briefly at the Fondazione Prada in Milan before closing permanently.

Also at the Kunsthistoriches Museum, a new comprehensive exhibit of works by 16th-century Dutch painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder is on view until Jan. 13, 2019. “Pieter Bruegel: Once in a Lifetime” is the world’s first major monograph exhibition, with close to half of the artist’s surviving works on view — roughly 60 drawings, 80 prints and 40 paintings, many on loan and traveling for the first time due to their extreme fragility. Next year marks the 450th anniversary of Bruegel the Elder’s death, and the selection of Vienna for the show is a natural, given nearly a third of the artist’s works are already part of the Kunsthistoriches Museum Wien’s permanent collection. Regarded as a highly observant social critic, Bruegel’s works tend to be incredibly detailed compositions that tell stories, depicting scenes from life contemporary to the time that satirized social mores. Among the works on display are “The Tower of Babel,” “The Gloomy Day” and “Two Monkeys.”

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
