US Bans Large Carry-On Electronic Devices on Some Flights from the Middle East

On the heels of President Trump’s two attempts to ban immigrants from certain Muslim-majority Middle Eastern countries, the United States banned large electronic devices from being carried aboard planes. They must now be stowed in checked luggage.

The ban applies to flights entering the United States from nine Middle East- and African-based airlines and 10 airports. The only exceptions are cell phones and electronic medical devices. Anything larger, such as an iPad, tablet, Kindle and portable DVD player, must be checked.

NBC News reported the ban was instituted because “evaluated intelligence indicates that terror groups continue to target aviation, to include smuggling explosives in electronic devices.”

There are around 50 daily flights into the United States from the nine airlines and 10 airports affected. The airlines include:

Royal Jordanian
Turkish Airlines
EgyptAir
Saudi Arabian Airlines
Kuwait Airways
Royal Air Maroc
Qatar Airways
Emirates
Etihad Airways

The airports are:

Queen Alia International, Amman, Jordan
Cairo International Airport
Ataturk International Airport Istanbul
King Abdulaziz International Airport Jeddah
King Khalid International Airport Riyadh
Kuwait International Airport
Mohammed V International Airport Casablanca
Doha International Airport
Dubai International Airport
Abu Dhabi International Airport

The United Kingdom instituted a similar ban that applies to flights from six countries: Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.
