The Transportation and Security Administration is now testing new screening procedures at 10 U.S. airports. There are no changes to what passengers can bring onto airplanes, just how TSA checks items.
In addition to taking out a laptop, passengers may need to remove additional items from their bag.
“Over the past year, TSA has been adjusting screening procedures at select U.S. airports on a trial basis. There are no changes to what is allowed in carry-on bags,” says TSA. “Travelers at select test locations may be asked to place certain electronics and other items in a separate bin for screening, and may experience additional bag checks.”
Electronics larger than a cell phone, like e-readers and tablets, may need to be removed. Some food items may require extra checks and must be put into a separate bin for screening as well. The rules will not apply to passengers with TSA PreCheck.
The procedures are part of the TSA’s ongoing efforts to enhance screening efforts and are not the result of a specific threat. The goal of the search techniques is to speed up lines and reduce the number of bag checks TSA officers have to perform. TSA began testing processes a year ago at four airports and expanded it to six more including Los Angeles International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
The agency does not believe the changes will create longer lines. The testing indicates the time lost from passengers removing items from bags is made up since fewer items confuse staffers at X-ray machines, allowing faster scanning and reducing the number of manual bag checks.
TSA is said to be testing a machine verifying travelers’ IDs rather than having an officer manually study passports and driver’s licenses. Travelers will walk up to the machine and hand their ID to an officer who will scan its bar code, and the machine will match them to a passenger list, making boarding passes no longer a requirement. The machines began testing in PreCheck lanes at four airports.
