TSA recently announced TSA Gold+, a new public-private partnership designed to modernize aviation security at select airports across the United States. The new program will pair the Screening Partnership Program with TSA’s authorities. It’s not an expedited means of travelers simply going through security. In other words, it’s for private companies to have more say in airport security screening, embracing a public-private partnership airports can opt in (or out) of.

Before the launch of TSA Gold+, there was already an existing program that allowed some airports to use contractors to conduct screenings instead of TSA officers authorized by the federal government. Airports currently using this private Screening Partnership Program can be found in San Francisco (SFO), Sarasota (SRQ), Atlantic City (ACY) and Kansas City (MCI), to name a few.

Now, this new program would expand on and enhance the previous one, allowing private partners to manage equipment and introduce new technologies.

“Opting in to TSA Gold+ lets airports and airlines quickly deploy advanced security technology, improve customer experience and unlock new revenue opportunities – all without lengthy federal budget cycles,” TSA noted. “Industry partners can manage equipment and introduce innovations, while travelers enjoy a smooth, predictable and bespoke experience.”

TSA did emphasize its federal oversight role would remain with the new program.

According to TSA’s official website, airports opting in to the new program will “work with TSA and prospective vendors to develop and deploy solutions that leverage private-sector investment, cutting-edge technology and human capital. This approach ensures airports meet robust federal security standards while driving operational excellence and responding to consumer needs.”

TSA also noted airports in the TSA Gold+ program will receive technology, staffing and maintenance at no additional cost to airports, unlocking new revenue streams, empowering local decision making and accelerating the deployment of solutions nationwide.

There are already debates as to the merits of the new program. Many praise prioritizing the latest technology (like AI tools) in airport screening operations to cut wait times and increase capacity, as well as privatize airport security screening. But opponents of the program warn there would be a greater lack of accountability and transparency.

According to Everett Kelley, president, American Federation of Government Employees union (which represents TSA officers), contract workers would earn less than TSA officers under the new program, and that technology in the aviation security enterprise would be going over to private vendors, raising the question of security clearances.
