On Feb. 22, a cartel leader was killed in a shoot-out in Jalisco by the Mexican military. In response, cartel members carried out violent retaliatory attacks, setting fire to vehicles and blocking roads. Jalisco governor Pablo Lemus suspended public transportation on Feb. 22, and the U.S. State Department advised American citizens in parts of Jalisco and other states to shelter in place and avoid non-essential travel until the situation stabilized.
The security warning was released for travelers to Mexico, especially Jalisco state, which covers Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara. The warning also advised travelers to avoid areas around law enforcement activity, monitor local media for updates, follow directions of local authorities and check @CAPUFE on X for status of road closures.
Other locations listed in the warning include Baja California State (including Tijuana, Tecate and Ensenada); Nayarit State (including Nuevo Nayarit/Nuevo Vallarta area near Puerto Vallarta); and areas in Colima, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Estado de Mexico, Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz and Zacatecas states.
Incidents were also reported Feb. 22 in places like Cancún, Tulum, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, but the U.S. Embassy has stated the situation has since returned to normal.
Also on Feb. 22, videos circulated online of passengers in a panic at Guadalajara Airport, leading to rumors of an airport takeover. Airport officials assured the public its facilities were operating normally.
Flights in Puerto Vallarta continue to be disrupted due to availability of flight crews. All other airports in Mexico remain open, with most operating normally. Airlines like Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Aeromexico and Air Canada canceled or reduced flights to both Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, with many offering customers flexible rebooking options.
Air Canada resumes flights today to Guadalajara after suspending service for a few days.
