Thanks to a new tourism tax, Edinburgh may become the most expensive European destination for travelers. Anyone traveling to Scotland’s capital can be charged €2, or 2 percent, on top of the room’s total cost per night if the Scottish Government continues with plans to add a tourism tax, also known as a Transient Visitor Levy.
The tourism industry believes the TVL would make the country much less competitive in the tourism market and one of the highest taxed, globally. If the TVL were to pass, Edinburgh would become the most expensive city for travelers to visit in all of Europe, beating out Rome, Paris and London.
According to the UK Hospitality committee, this levy would result in far fewer tourists and damage to the Scottish economy and job market, as fewer travelers would stay in the city or choose to visit at all.
