Set on a picturesque 12,500-acre working sheep and cattle ranch, Montana’s Tippet Rise Art Center hosts classical and contemporary music performances and exhibits large-scale outdoor sculptures. With prior registration via the Tippet Rise website, visitors can explore the incredible ranch and stunning sculptures using free hiking and biking tours.

This summer, four new sculptures will join the large-scale works and innovative architectural structures situated across the art center’s hills and rolling meadows. Among existing works by some of the world’s foremost artists and architects, such as Alexander Calder, Francis Kéré and Stephen Talasnik, Tippet Rise will add new sculptures by Ai Weiwei, Mark di Suvero and Ensamble Studio. Additionally, Patrick Dougherty will recreate his 2015 sculpture, Daydreams.
Artwork set within the landscape include several commissioned, site-specific sculptural structures by Ensamble Studio, including the 25-foot-tall Beartooth Portal (2015), composed of two vertical rock-like forms standing approximately 25 feet apart at ground level and leaning together at the top; the similarly designed 26-foot Inverted Portal (2016); and the 98 x 16 feet Domo (2016). Xylem (2019), a pavilion designed for Tippet Rise by Francis Kéré, is nestled into a grove of aspen trees, providing a quiet place for visitors to rest and contemplate the landscape.

Tippet Rise is open to visitors starting June 10 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, through Sept. 25. Visitors can explore the working ranch via 13.25 miles of free hiking and biking trails. The musical season includes world premieres and debuts throughout weekends from Aug. 26 to Sept. 25. Prior registration via the Tippet Rise website is required for all visitors at all times.
Tippet Rise is located six miles from the town of Fish Tail, in Stillwater County. Rural towns and larger cities like Billings (one hour) and Bozeman (two hours) provide dining and accommodation options, as well as activities like riding river rapids by raft, mountain biking or relaxing in a hot spring.
