The World Travel & Tourism Council recently launched the searched for the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World, an international initiative to celebrate and identify landmarks and buildings created since 1801 that have had the greatest impact on travel and tourism, economic development and local communities, and continue to redefine the future of destinations around the globe.
And, for the first time in history, people around the world can nominate and help select places they believe best define the modern age of travel. The campaign aims to not only recognize architecturally and culturally significant sites, but also establish a new global benchmark for contemporary wonders. WTTC also hopes to honor the transformative role these places play in revitalizing economies, creating jobs and attracting investment.
“Wonder is not something humanity stopped creating centuries ago. Every generation leaves its mark on the world,” said Gloria Guevara, president and CEO, WTTC. “We are inviting people everywhere to help recognize the landmarks that have defined the modern age and will continue to inspire new ways of experiencing the world.”
From Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, Egypt, to Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, contemporary wonders like these demonstrate how visionary investment, bold ambition and long-term collaboration can alter a destination’s global standing.
The campaign seeks to recognized globally celebrated icons, but also emerging landmarks that have delivered a meaningful impact on their communities and have the potential to shape the next generation of tourism destination.
“The most influential tourism assets do far more than attract visitors,” added Guevara. “They create jobs, stimulate investment, support local businesses, strengthen communities and enhance the global profile of destinations. We want to showcase how visionary investments in tourism infrastructure and cultural assets can deliver lasting economic and social value for generations.”
The year-long campaign follows four stages. On July 7, nominations opened worldwide. On Jan. 7, 2027, the 70 narrowed nominees will be announced and public voting begins. On April 7, 2027, the shortlist narrows to 30 finalists. And on July 7, 2027, the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World will be revealed.
